How to choose the best anti-pollution mask
Bike / motorcycle anti-pollution mask
Filtration efficiency
- Standard and class: aim for at least FFP2 (EN 149 standard), or FFP3 for heavy exposure. International equivalents are N95/N99 (US) and KN95 (China). Check for the CE marking followed by the notified body’s number.
- Fine particles: the mask must block PM2.5 and ideally PM1. For ultrafine diesel particles, choose a filter tested at 0.3 µm.
- Gases and odours: a particle filter alone does not stop NO₂, ozone or VOCs. You need an activated carbon layer, whose effectiveness is limited and which saturates quickly.
- Surgical mask: insufficient, because it does not seal properly.
Seal
- Facial fit: this is the number one criterion, because a poorly fitted mask lets air in around the sides. Choose masks with repositionable fasteners, such as velcro, at the back of the neck.
- Nose clip: preferably in flexible metal, to seal properly and limit air leaking along the nose.
- Multiple sizes: choose brands that offer several sizes (suited to each face shape), otherwise the mask will be ineffective, especially for women and smaller faces.
- Beard: it makes a proper seal almost impossible, because the mask does not sit against the skin and air gets through. The only workaround is a ventilated hood.
Breathability during exercise (especially when cycling)
- Low breathing resistance: because airflow increases significantly during exercise.
- Exhalation valve(s): not necessary if the mask material is highly breathable, unless the valve is in front of the mouth. Valves on the sides are ineffective.
- Large filtering surface: the larger it is, the easier it is to breathe. The filter should cover almost the entire mask around the mouth and eyes.
- Moisture wicking: to stop the mask from getting soaked with condensation. Avoid unperforated neoprene masks of the kind used by couriers.
Compatibility with your gear
- Fogging on glasses or visor: a highly breathable mask material and a good seal at the top of the nose (nose clip) limit fogging.
- Fastening: repositionable straps behind the head at the back of the neck hold better than ear loops, especially with a helmet.
- Stability at high speed: the mask must stay in place.
- Compatibility with the type of helmet.: only full-face motorcycle helmets prevent wearing a mask, which is usually too bulky for the space between the helmet and the face. The mask also tends to come off when you put the helmet on.
Comfort and use
- Weight and breathable materials: especially in summer.
- Hygiene: washable mask and replaceable filter.
- Cost: Check the stated filter lifespan and cost before buying.
Anti-pollen mask
Filtration efficiency
- Pollen size: pollen grains are large (about 10 to 100 µm), so an FFP1 is enough in theory.
- FFP2 is still recommended, because pollen breaks down into micro-allergens after rain or a thunderstorm, and pollen and pollution make each other worse.
- Surgical mask: insufficient, because it does not seal properly.
Seal and fit
- As with pollution: nose clip, the right size and continuous contact with the face.
Comfort for extended wear
- Low breathing resistance, important for asthma sufferers: an FFP3 can be hard for them to tolerate, so ask your doctor for advice.
- Hypoallergenic, latex-free materials.
- Lightweight and not too warm, for use in spring and summer.
- Discreet, if you wear it every day.
Hygiene (specific to pollen)
- Pollen on the outer surface: pollen builds up there, so avoid touching the outside of the mask.
- Frequent replacement or washing: a washable mask or disposable filters, replaced regularly.
- Storage in a sealed pouch so you don’t bring pollen home.
Use
- Eye protection: wear wraparound glasses to prevent allergic conjunctivitis.
- Compatibility with glasses: without fogging.
- Cost over a full pollen season: which lasts several months.
- Medical advice: a mask complements anti-allergy treatment but does not replace it.
Mask for sport shooting
Pollutants involved
- Lead: lead fumes and dust come from primers (lead styphnate) and projectiles. This is the main risk at poorly ventilated indoor ranges.
- Other metals: barium and antimony, found in gunshot residue.
- Gun cleaning solvents: these give off organic vapours.
Filtration efficiency
- Lead fumes: aim for FFP3 or a P3 filter (P100 in the US), because lead forms very fine particles.
- Solvents: you need a combined A (organic vapours) + P3 filter, for example an A2P3.
- Format: a half mask with cartridges (EN 140 standard, EN 14387 / EN 143 filters) is often better suited and more cost-effective than a disposable mask for regular use.
Compatibility with shooting
- Low profile: the mask must not interfere with your cheek weld on the stock (rifle, shotgun) or with your head position.
- Volume: cartridges offset to the sides or the back, or a flat mask, for the same reason.
- Shooting glasses: no fogging, since your aim depends directly on it.
- Hearing protection: the mask straps must not break the seal of the ear cups around the ears.
- Breathing: low breathing resistance is important, because shooters control their breathing at the moment of the trigger release.
Seal
- Same requirement as for the other uses: a beard is incompatible, and a fit test is recommended.
Hygiene and use
- Cartridge lifespan and cost: A cartridges become saturated even when unused once the packaging is opened.
- Easy to take apart and clean: since lead dust is toxic.
- Airtight storage: to avoid contaminating your car or home.
- Regulations: check the range’s ventilation and, if you are an instructor or a professional, have your blood lead level monitored.
- Outdoor shooting: the risk is much lower, and a mask is mainly useful at indoor ranges and during cleaning.
Criteria common to all three uses
- A certified standard (EN 149 or EN 140/143/14387) with CE marking.
- A proper facial seal, which matters more than the filter class.
- Breathing resistance suited to the activity.
- Compatibility with your glasses, helmet or hearing protection.
- The cost and replacement frequency of the filters.
