Motorcyclists ride in the middle of road traffic, the place where air pollution remains the most concentrated. These particles come mainly from exhaust fumes, worn brake pads and tires on asphalt. It is in the traffic flow that we are most exposed to fine particles. Most bikers feel they don't feel it. In fact, according to them, the pollution would be much less noticeable with speed, but it is still there. Is it why very few bikers wear anti-pollution masks compared to cyclists?
A lack of knowledge about air pollution
Many bikers wear a scarf or a balaclava thinking they have enough filtration against airborn pollution. This is quite ridiculous! A barrier against cold or bugs at best. An effective biker anti-pollution mask must have a real filtration standard (FFP1, FFP2/N95 or FFP3/N99) as well as a CE marking. Most masks sold in motorcycle stores come from China and do not meet these standards, which are nevertheless mandatory. Would you buy a helmet or gloves without a standard?
A biker anti-pollution mask is also a good way to protect from pollen in Spring. A FFP2/N95 mask filters particles down to 0.4µm, which is much smaller than the largest pollen.
Have you ever had the unpleasant sensation of having an irritated throat after a long ride, especially when you are driving on congested roads? This is the effect of dust and other airborn pollution particles when they penetrate your respiratory tract.
Air quality is improving but not fast enough!
Large cities set up different solutions to address the increase in fine particles that pollute the daily lives of residents:
- Reduction of the maximum authorized speed
- Limited traffic for heavy trucks in urban areas
- Alternating traffic on days of pollution peak
- Implementation of "Crit'air" stickers in French low emission zones
- Free residential parking and public transport
- Construction of dedicated cycling paths
- Development of bicycle free floating.
Result : decreases are observed in concentrations of nitrogen dioxide and PM2.5, but motorcyclists, like cyclists and pedestrians, are still very exposed. Anti-pollution masks specially designed for users most exposed to air pollution remain the only alternative even if they do not protect 100%. Diesel particles and other nanoparticles are so small that they are difficult to filter.
Are biker anti-pollution masks efficient?
Frogmask incorporates a FFP2/N95 removable 5 layers filter blocking a minimum of 94% of fine airborn particles down to 0.4 microns. Frogmask motorcycle masks are compatible with jet and modular helmets but unfortunately not with full-face helmets that make the mask fall off when you put them on. No brand of motorcycle masks is really compatible with this type of helmet.

Frogmask masks are designed for bikers
I tried and tested all the masks on the market to form my opinion before creating my proff of concept. I wanted to offer the best value for money on the market for motorcycle masks against pollution.
The velcro fastening system at the nape of the neck does not interfere with wearing a helmet at all, unlike masks with double straps, one of which passes over the top of the skull. With use and with the weight of the helmet, it can become very uncomfortable. The elastic bands around the ears do not exert any pressure on them. They prevent the mask from slipping when you put on your helmet. A real plus!
The two flexible nosebands, one on the mask and one on the filter, help limit the rise of hot exhaled air along the nose. Frogmask therefore causes less fogging on the glasses or visor than a conventional mask.
The 3D Mesh mask is ultra-light and ultra-breathable, unlike neoprene masks which quickly become very hot... too hot, especially in summer. In fact, exhaled water vapor creates condensation inside.
Frogmask biker anti-pollution masks also have the advantage of keeping you warm in winter, protecting you from the rain thanks to their water-repellent 3D mesh structure and protecting you from pollen and insects in spring.
The support is washable and reusable, however the filters must be replaced every 2 to 3 weeks on average depending on the frequency of use and the level of pollution.

Easy and quick size exchange
It is best to choose a brand of masks that offers different sizes because we do not all have the same face shape. A one-size-fits-all mask will not have the same seal between the filter and the skin between a 55Kg woman and an 85Kg man so its effectiveness will be reduced. If the air inhaled passes through the sides, your mask will be useless.

The price of a mask is 39€ with a one-year warranty against manufacturing defects but excluding wear and tear related to use of course. This price is in the lower average of the market because some prices go up to 130 euros.
So that you feel completely comfortable and that the risk that the mask does not suit you is not a deterrent to purchase, I offer to refund you if you are not satisfied. Fortunately this is very rare... but it happens (some shapes and sizes of noses or ears are not compatible).
