The Lyon metropolitan area is by far the region where my Frogmask anti-pollution cycling masks sell best. This is quite surprising when you consider the explosion of cycling in the much more populated Paris region. I wanted to find out how the city of Lyon has embraced cycling and why urban cyclists in Lyon are so keen on cycling protection masks.
Lyon, the two-wheeled metropolis
Lyon, with its rich historical heritage and dynamic culture, is not just a city to discover on foot or by tram. It is also a metropolis that has adapted to the growing needs of cyclists, thus facilitating the daily commutes of Lyon residents.
Cycle paths and parking
Public adoption of cycling has been boosted by the creation of 39 km of cycling facilities and 6,200 bicycle parking spaces, not to mention the 95 km of "coronapistes" deployed by the Metropolis in 2020. The self-service Vélo'v bikes, available throughout the agglomeration, have also played a significant role.
Cycling is also a tool for decarbonized deliveries, encouraged by the first parking spaces for cargo bikes (3rd arrondissement) and the support of Lyon Parc Auto for the initiative of 6 companies united under the "Ma livraison zen" banner.
The Lyon lanes ("Voies Lyonnaises")
This is a network of wide and secure cycle paths that will cover the territory by 2026. The objective is to encourage cycling in the Metropolis by removing the primary barrier to cycling, which is safety.
Designed as a public transport network, the 12 lines will connect peripheral communes to the city center, as well as the cities of the first ring amongst themselves.

A genuine political will for a single objective
Lyon 2030 is a collective and collaborative approach of significant scope, also quite unique in France, to reflect on and implement actions to achieve carbon neutrality in the city of Lyon within 6 years. I recommend the association "Pignon sur rue" www.pignonsurrue.org, which aims to popularize cycling from a young age. The city also organizes the Lyon Bike Festival every two years, as well as the Cargo Bike Festival in May in Place Bellecour.
Lyon also invests in active mobility companies
The Lyon metropolitan area is becoming the European capital of the mobility sector thanks to "Le Grand Plateau," a professional third-place based in Villeurbanne that hosts and connects cycling and micromobility players. An offshoot of the Mad (active and sustainable mobility) cluster, Le Grand Plateau has been federating and animating the community of entrepreneurs around cycling and active mobility since June 2022. 21 resident companies now share a coworking space, workshops, and storage areas. This space creates synergies to help them develop. Le Grand Plateau has also enabled the creation of the "Usine à vélo" (bicycle factory), a shared factory, unique in the world, for several brands such as Motion Engineering (revolutionary forks), Douze Cycles, Vefaa, Baramind, etc.
You can also find rental of bicycles, e-bikes, and cargo bikes for individuals or businesses there.
Pollution in Lyon: a challenge for cyclists
Unfortunately, like most large cities, Lyon is not immune to air pollution. It is probably even more exposed than the average large metropolis due to the proximity of the many refineries in the immense petrochemical zone of Feyzin. Fine particles, exhaust gases, and other pollutants therefore represent a major risk for cyclists who travel through the city daily. Protecting your respiratory system from harmful particles is essential, especially when exposed daily to urban pollution.
Frogmask: the Lyon ally for a healthy bike commute
Fortunately, a solution exists to protect your health while enjoying the freedom offered by cycling. Handcrafted in Décines, Frogmask anti-pollution masks are the ideal answer for cyclists concerned about their well-being.
I created the Frogmask brand in 2020 to equip the many male and female bike commuters keen to protect their respiratory systems on their daily commutes.
Made from 3D Mesh, the Frogmask weighs less than 50g. It is adjustable with a Velcro strap at the nape of the neck, which in no way hinders wearing a helmet, even with a ponytail!
The mask does not filter; it is a holder for an FFP2 filter (which filters a minimum of 94% of fine particles down to 0.4µm) that is placed inside the holder and which, itself, has real filtering power. The mask is machine washable at 60°C and hand washable. The filter should be replaced every 2 to 3 weeks depending on the intensity of use and the level of pollution. Generally, it gets dirty faster than it gets full due to contact with the skin.
Two flexible aluminum strips at nose level (one in the mask structure and one on the filter) prevent expelled warm air from rising along the nose. This greatly limits fogging for glasses wearers.
Frogmask cycling masks are available in 3 sizes to provide each individual with a mask adapted to their morphology. The effectiveness of an anti-pollution mask strongly depends on its airtightness with the skin. If inhaled air passes through the sides, it is not filtered and the mask is useless. This is why it is recommended to avoid buying one-size-fits-all masks. They are much less effective.
Frogmask masks are guaranteed for one year and delivery is free for a price under 40 euros including tax.
I am currently in discussions to integrate the rewards store of the TCL network's loyalty program and several specialized stores that are currently shunning masks, finding them too anxiety-provoking.

Tips for safe cycling in Lyon
- Even if it's not compulsory after 12 years of age, please wear a helmet and gloves!
- Opt for less polluted routes: prioritize cycle paths and secondary streets. Lyon has an ever-expanding cycling network, so take advantage of it to avoid major roads.
- Adjust your schedule: if possible, avoid rush hours. Outside these times, pollutant concentration is often lower.
- Maintain your bike and your protective mask: a well-maintained bike guarantees you a better riding experience and better performance, especially if it's not equipped with a motor. As for your Frogmask, remember to clean it regularly for optimal effectiveness.
Join the movement for healthy urban mobility
Cycling in Lyon is not just a trend. It is a fundamental movement for a greener and healthier city. By combining this ecological mode of transport with Frogmask cycling masks, you actively contribute to a more breathable future while immediately protecting yourself with a local brand.
