POLLUTION: WHY COVID MASKS ARE NOT RECOMMENDED
Why is wearing a mask not recommended in case of pollution?
The answer is simple: "masks are often not FFP1 certified, especially for cyclists or motorcyclists, and are therefore almost ineffective against air pollution. They do not filter air born particules.
Surgical masks are primarily designed to filter the air exhaled by the mask wearer rather than the air inhaled.
They are not airtight either. Often too large for some faces, a surgical mask will gap at the sides and these gaps can allow very fine airborne particles to pass through.
It is recommended to either drive quietly, and adapt your route away from high traffic areas, or to use a certified mask that is well adapted to the shape of your face, such as the Frogmask.
